My Mom was a WAVE during WWII and was a PO at the Coast Guard radio
station on Cape Cod. She and her best friend used to walk the beach
at night - according to her it wasn't unusual to watch Navy and CG
ships chasing subs in the distance - say a mile or two off shore.
