Has anyone ever attached a flow meter to the raw water line just before
discharge? I would think if you could get a baseline reading with a new
impeller or go by the flow rate of the pump at a given rpm then if it drops
it would indicate an impeller change or it would aid in diagnosis of an
overheating condition. Maybe even a remote display. My pump is supposed to
produce 26 gpm @ 1800 rpm. I have no idea what the output really is.
Any thoughts?

I have a low tech solution. Put a strainer in the intake line and
locate it somewhere with easy visibility through the clear lid to
check flow. I have a Vetus strainer http://www.vetus.com/frame-cat.htm
with the top protruding through the engine cover where it is easily
visible with a quick peak down the companionway. As a bonus it makes
it very easy to run the engine when out of the water by feeding the
strainer from a garden hose -- great when winterizing or preparing for
launch.
