I've run across his name many times in trying to get educated about
boats.
I suspect some here have been in boats of his design.
I'm sure you have. *You either loved Bolger designed boats or hated
them - there was no inbetween.
He teamed up with a guy I actually got to know pretty well - Harold
Payson (sometimes called "Dynamite") and they designed a whole series
of stitch/glue plywood boats that became widely accepted as a great
way to build a safe, sound boat. The Mystic Seaport held seminars and
classes using their designs. Back when I was out of rehab and getting
back on my feet as an engineer, Mrs. Wave bought me one of the first
Bolger books which pointed me to Payson and I struck up a weekly
telephone call with Harold as I built one of the dory designs.
Eventualy I traveled up to Maine to meet him and I have all his books,
autographed of course. *:)
That first dory is still floating - it now has a basic sail rig with
side boards and sails around Webster Lake in fine fashion.
Simple, cheap to build and, as hard as it may be to believe, built to
last if you take you time, use quality materials and built it exactly
as designed. *I spent a lot of really happy hours in my shop building
that boat and believe me, it kept me from thinking about other issues.
I give that boat a lot of credit and a major assist to the rest of my
life. *:)
Thumbs up!
