I'm all for
buying a good set of used sails to get my feet wet.


For some reason most everything was still with the boat but a boom.
Would there have been a sail option with no boom?


No, you need that spar. If you can't find it then you'll need to buy
one. How can you order used sails without knowing the length of the foot?
When you order the sails ask if the price includes battens.
Before you throw too much money at this boat I'd recommend learning how
to sail and row small boats. It sounds as if you lack the basics.
