Never heard of it either.
I'd just collect them after a good rain.
Only used them for bluegills, perch and catfish though.
Very unusual to get a crappie on a worm where I fished.

They just didn't like them. They liked minnows.
I can only recall one time a crappie was caught with a worm.
Wasn't me who caught it.
Part of it might have been how we fished too.
Since crappies liked minnows that's what we used when we were after
them, usually in deeper water.
This was in the Chain-O-Lakes.
