You might find it a more tolerable trip to go down the Mississippi only to
the Ohio River then a short ways to the Tennessee River, the take the
Tenn-Tom Bigbee Waterway to Mobile. Very little fuel available on the lower
half of the Mississippi and lots of barge traffic.

This is the way to go. Very little if any recreational traffic goes
down the Mississippi, past St. Louis. Too much commercial traffic;
too much current and debris. Just plain dangerous the further south
you go. The TennTomBigby is known as the snowbird route, as most all
recreational traffic follows this. If memory serves, Quimby's has the
TennTomBigby in its cruising guide. It's a long trip.
