Default Perkins 4-108, How good?

We had a friend whose Choate 37 was stolen and run upon a sand bar. The
thieves pegged the throttle and when the boat wouldn't free itself, they
abandoned the ship and left it running - full throttle! That engine was
a Perkins 4-108. Eventually, it ran out of fuel, and stopped running.
The owners recovered it at high tide, restarted the motor and it runs to
this day. It's a great motor.

good luck

I have a chance to salvage and sell a Perkins 4-108 from a fishing boat that
is going to be scuttled or scrapped. The original owner of this boat died
and ownership changed hands. Therefore I can't obtain any history on the
engine.

This engine will still turn over but since the fuel has been removed, I
can't start it to see how it runs.. It was running fine when the boat was
abandon at the marina 6 years ago. (I emptied the fuel tanks 6 months ago
and the fuel had been treated and was still ing good condition) The engine
looks like it had been well maintained.

The only thing that it will cost me, is my labor..

If I ultimately am able to start and run this engine, how much would it go
for (complete with, electrical, coolers and reverse gear)?? Say on eBay or
rec.boat.marketplace ??

I know this model has been around for many years. What kind of reputation
does it have among rec. boaters??
