In my experience Maryland always had the crookedest politicians.
Where else could Spiro Agnew run as the reform candidate and actually
be cleaner than his predecessor?. ... well maybe Chicago.
Maryland certainly has and has had its share of "colorful" political
characters. :)
In the election for U.S. Senate that he lost, Steele had printed up
flyers especially for black neighborhoods that indicated he had a bunch
of endorsements from black grounds that he actually didn't have. It was
sort of a minor news item for a couple of days.
Steele is a pretty bright guy. But he's doctrinaire, and my hope for him
is that his "conservativism" does further damage to the GOP as it is now
constituted. I'm so hoping for the nomination of Sarah Palin in 2012.
Steele could help make it happen.
