You've been reading too much Dickens.

Every few years, I reread three or four of his novels. I guess I have been
through the entire cycle a half dozen times or more.
My mother, bless her heart, was an avid reader (still is) and all through
my childhood insisted that I read at least a book a week during the summer
school vacation. She didn't care what I read, as long as I read at least a
book a week. I remember it started with the "Hardy Boys" series back in
about 6th grade. As I got older, she would "suggest" certain books to
read.
One year though, I found a very old collection of Edgar Allen Poe's complete
works in a bookcase in the attic. I started reading some of his stuff and I
think it freaked her out.
I got a brief reprieve from reading that summer. The books (or book ...
can't remember if it was a single, thick book or several) were (was) bound
in real leather and looked as spooky as some of Poe's tales.
