I heard a guy say it a few years ago. A few days after 911 I was
watching a firefighter who had pulled folk out of the towers before
they went down.. He is the way it went down:

interviewing a firefighter injured on September 11. He said that it
was "just like in a movie". At one point he (the interviewer) thanked
the fallen hero for going into the building with no concern for
himself or his own safety. "The firefighter lifted his head, and with
a thick NY accent said", "Whadidya expect, I'm a New Yorker".

We had a Japan airlines 747 land short of SFO years ago. First people to
it were small boats fishing the bay. Luckily the water is about 55
degrees, and the air was warmer on the day. But people help out in most
areas of the country. NOLA excepted.
