Oh, I thought he meant the State Government.
I don't know about La., but my home state is Il. and it was pretty
crooked when the first Daly ran it from Chicago, and for a long time
before that. I wonder if "getting caught" is all that separates one
state
from another that way?

I always hate OT but since I grew up in IL and went to undergrad in LA
(Tulane) I couldn't resist

IL (Actually Chicago) has ALWAYS been more corrupt than LA... since the
days of Cappone and then the first mayor Daly. They were always just
much smarter about not getting caught until the more recent years.
BTW.. the city (Chicago) always runs BETTER and more efficiently with a
corrupt mayor.

Also interesting fact (I use the word fact lightly) According to the FBI
only 48% of the murderers in the US ever serve time.... in recent history
50% of the IL Gov's will serve time.. so... you are more likely to go to
prison if you are elected as Gov of IL than if you committ MURDER!!!!
:-)

I am glad I now live in South Florida... a beautiful little Banana
republic where we expect our politicians to be on the take.... Look out
NJ... we are coming up fast in the outer lane!!! you could be #4.

nail on head

True! I am so mortified that my proud home state of NJ is getting eclipsed
by places like Illinois.

We need a PR firm for our corruption. We need better and more newsworthy
corruption.

But how do you compete when your closest neighbor elects a governor who made
his name tracking down prostitution rings, then gets caught in bed with a
skanky $1000/hour hooker?

Raumsog, Lord

Ruler of the planet Raumsog's World. He tried to attack Old Earth, bribed the
Instrumentality (this never works), imprisoned the Go-Captains, killed the
pinlighters [but, one hopes, not the partners]; he was defeated by the golden
ship. Killed on his planet.

[
On Earth the lords of the Instrumentality met. The presiding chairman
looked about and said, "Well, gentlemen, all of us have been bribed by
Raumsog. We have all been paid off individually. I myself received six
ounces of stroon in pure form. Will the rest of you show better bargains?"

Around the room, the councilors announced the amount of their bribes.

The chairman turned to the secretary. "Enter the bribes in the record and
then mark the record off-the-record."

The others nodded gravely.

On a very remote planet, the survivors of a Raumsog cruiser were released
from internment. By special orders, direct from Earth, their memories had
been discoordinated so that they would not reveal the pattern of defeat. An
obstinate reporter kept after one spaceman. After many hour of hard drinking
the survivor's answer was the same:

"Golden the ship was - oh! oh! oh! Golden the ship was - oh! oh! oh!"
