I don't have the outboard that you have (I wish I had). Last time
when my 115hp Mercury outboard has the similar problem, I tracked the
problem to the failure of one of the electric module (called "servor"
spelling???). I believe it is like a relay. One for tilting the
outboard up, another one for tilting the outboard down. I identified
the failed module by swapping those two modules, and found that the
problem went with the module. Replacing the failed one with a new one
fixed the problem. You probably need a Maintenance and Repair Manual
to locate the modules because the owner manual does not likely mention
anything about this.

jay, you could be right. I'm not sure aboutt he Yamahas but some power
trim units don't have a bi-directional motor, so the pump doesn't turn
backwards for lift. This is controlled by a solenoid operating a valve
in the hydrolic pump itself to switch directions of the flow through
the pump. * If the motor seems to "free-spin" while trying to lift the
engine, I would say that it could be the pump not reversing the flow.

But then again. have you checked the fluid level in the oil
reservoir? *If it's low, that could also be your problem. Or at least
a contributing factor.

I think it is strictly electric screw drive. *There is not oil reservoir
that I have ever noticed on my T-8.

OK, well that would mean, the motor is reversible, so either a relay
or probably the switch
