I spent a good amount of time in the Martinez area, used to go to the
pier and watch the sturgeon fishermen come in. I've always wanted to
try it, and never have. Didn't have a boat when I was there!
Your cell had a view, eh?

Damn. So much for a nice, friendly thread about fishing! How typical.

Awesome, aint it. Let's look who started the thread down the dark road...

Thanks for the reports Dale. I need to get up to Hogan one of these days. My
favorite lake up there lately is New Melones, but mostly for family stuff.. A
little of everything; cruising, fishing, skiing, wakeboarding, swimming,
etc.

Let us know how the sturgeon hunt goes.

Thanks, Vic.

Mike,

New Melones is a sad tale this year. One fella pulled out a 21" trout
a week or so ago that was freakishly underweight. The kokanee are
numerous and very small, which is strange this time of year. Brown
trout used to be caught somewhat regularly but seldom now. The common
thinking is that the shad have disappeared for some reason, leaving
the place a starvation hole for trout. Too bad we can't truck half of
the zillions of shad in Hogan up to New Melones.

Sturgeon fishing is very time consuming and if I get one in four or
five trips, it's a good year - and the limit is now just three per
year and the slot has been reduced from 46" - 72" to 46" - 66". So
more are now released than ever before. But a fella has to enjoy the
beer and the music while waiting for that little sturgeon nibble. And
that ain't all bad!
