Been using plain old carnauba based car wax on my boat for years. *Why
is it not intended to protect gel coat?

Good point. I agree about carnuba waxes but most car waxes, including
Turtle Wax ( http://www.turtlewax.com/main.taf?p=2,1,4,1 0=) are not
carnuba waxes.
