Just looking for tips... have spent quite a while in Google and all we
can turn up is camping trips for several days and hundreds of dollars
which is not exactly what we're after; we need a river ride for part
of /most of a day and then we move on to our other destinations on the
trip.

I'll echo the Hell's Canyon advice. A while ago (many many moons,
grasshopper) some friends and I did a whirlwind tour of western
permitted rivers, without a permit. We drove to the put-ins and camped
out until we got a cancellation spot. Our first river was the MidFork
Salmon (it took like, a day), then drove to the Deschutes, Rogue, and
I forget what else. Along the way, we wanted to do the Snake, but
could not spare the time for a full run and were not willing to wait
for a cancellation. So we put on above Hell's Canyon, ran the big
drops by midafternoon, then flagged down a jetboat and hitched a ride
back upstream to put in. We didn't even make any pre-arrangements
beyond telling an outfitter at put-in to tell the jetboats to keep an
eye out for us. I think it cost us something like $20 per person and
$50 a raft, but like I said, it was forever ago. It was kind of
sobering to blast right back up the same rapids that we had just run
down, pucker factor and all (we were in tiny rafts). But it sure was
sweet to chalk up another river without having to do all the
logistics.
