i'm not rich, or religious enough to vote republican. i work for a
living.

Keep the faith, work hard, vote Republican ..... and you may become rich.

another popular myth fostered by the GOP to keep trailer trash in
their place

i used to work for ATT until they laid off 100,000 workers. you were
saying about 'working hard'?

Happens all the time, in all businesses, for all kinds of reasons. My son's
father-in-law worked all his life for the Boston Globe. Belonged to
whatever union applied. For obvious reasons, the print media is making
major cutbacks, just like I am sure ATT had to in order to stay in business.
The Globe offered very generous early retirement packages to those with many
years of service. His union decided to fight to the end, trying to get more
and he almost lost his job plus the package. Fortunately, some of us
talked some sense into his head and he accepted the day before the offer
expired. Now retired and enjoying life.

The secret is: Make yourself valuable and don't put all your eggs in one
basket.

BTW, I am not particularly anti-union. For some it's a good way to make up
for a lack of self-reliance, I guess. I just never had any need for the
safety net of a union, either to negotiate my pay and benefits or guarantee
my job. As a former business owner, we had many tradespeople, most of whom
were former union members at one point or another, who much preferred the
culture, benefits and working environment of our non-union shop.
