The loft of a golf club puts backspin on the ball which lowers the
pressure above the ball, and raises it below it. This tends to hold
the ball up and make it go farther. This is called the Magnus effect.
It works much better with a dimpled ball, which will go aboout twice
as far as a smooth one.
