Actually EPIRB's transmit to BOTH... They use 406 Mhz for Sat coverage,
and have a 121.5/243 Mhz low power beacon for Aircraft & Vessel SAR
Homing, plus usually a Strobe, for visual Position Fixing.

And the little walkie talkie personal ones are next to usless offshore
in the water and have a very short battery life compared to a class A
Cat 1.

Then he claims he keeps his below decks, worried it may be washed
over. Just how stupid is that?
I understand he's a lifeboat man, yet has no understanding of a
hydrostatic release.
