Default OT Camera question for Bob

Hey Bob, I'm going to take trip across the continent via train. I'd like
you're recommendations for a camera that powers up quickly, has a decent
optical zoom, 3 to 5 mega pixel, uses SD memory and of course is
practically free!

Thanks
Marty

Marty, no P&S is very fast, but the cheap Panasonic Luminix models are
okay. Same with the Casios. Try to buy a model that takes AA's since
that will give you better control over things. Proprietary batteries
offer longer life, but when they die you dead in the water until you
can recharge.
You probably won't go for it, but about 500 bucks can buy you a Nikon
D40 and a 18-55 lens. This small DSLR and lens combo will end up being
more of a bargain than the cheaper P&S model since it will return far
nicer results, react instantly and shoot 800 photos on a single
charge! It's quite small and easier to use than most P&S models. Plus
you can expand it as you wish.

My father, using it for the very 1st time on the Galapagos Islands
came back with shots like this:
