There are people right here in this town, old farmer's mostly, who
have never been further South than Putnam and further North than
Southbridge.
I met one who has never even been out of town except for when he was a
teenager and actually took a trip to the big city of Worcester on the
Providence/Worcester railroad.
My dad was like that. He took one trip to Cape Breton when he was in his
30s (mom's home town of St. Peter's)
and that was it until I started taking him on drives. Trouble is..he always
wanted to be back home that night.
When they finally built the Confederation Bridge linking Prince Edward
Island with New brunswick, we took him, mom and the mother-in-law
on a neat trip... drove from the city to the PEI ferry near Pictou, covered
a good bit of the island including Cavendish (Anne of Green Gables),
and returned via the Confederation bridge & New Brunswick...all in one day.
So he got to travel in three provinces....first time he was ever out of Nova
Scotia.
