when I am there. I
do love the beaches, the multi-cultural atmosphere, the art galleries,
the other cultural venues, the fishing, the fabulous restaurants and the
shopping between Boca and Miami Beach. SW area of Florida is just too
dull and distant for my taste, but I do understand why many go there to
"get away" from it all.
I guess I don't find the serenity of the mangroves and the wildlife
you can only find there "dull". I live directly adjacent to about 70
square miles of aquatic and upland preserve area. I wouldn't trade
that for all the art galleries and resturants in the world. You can
take a 5 mile walk in the "Scrub" preserve at the end of my street and
see deer, otters, bald eagles and other critters in their natural
habitat (not eating out of a dumpster).
Back bay boating, bird watching and fishing is as good as anywhere in
the world. I am still only a half day drive from the Keys if I want to
do some serious diving but we have a little knoiwn reef at Wiggins
Pass, a few miles south of me. Guys get lobsters at their secret spots
right off our coast.
I still have a Ruth Chris within 5 miles of the house and an
international airport 10 miles away so this is not a total backwater.
I can look out my back window and see deer, hawks, eagles, raccoons,
foxes, possums, sometimes quail and sometimes wild turkeys, and other
critters. If I want mangroves, I head to the Keys.
