The following news was issued today by J.D. Power and Associates.

Throttle Ahead of the Competition in New-Boat Owner Satisfaction
Despite Quality Improvements Across the Industry, Overall Boat Owner
Satisfaction Remains Unchanged
Why doesn't JD Power publish reports on the quality, not initial
quality, of boats at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 years of ownership?- Hide quoted text -

Especially after the first couple of years, the maintenance and usage
practices of the owners can have a greater impact on the quality of a
used boat than any difference in the original build. We've all seen
somebody turn what started out as a nice boat into a real garbage
barge, and we've all seen what began as a boat of only moderate
quality
very well maintained and upgraded.

What is the criteria for a quality boat? If it is still shinny and has
that new boat smell three months after I bought it then it is a
"quality" boat?- Hide quoted text -

If you buy something decently built and then abusively proceed to beat
the crap out of it for 2-3 years, is it entirely the fault of the
original mfgr when you begin having problems?

I laugh every time I hear or see a radio or TV commercial or view an
advertisement stating that the whatever is it being pushed was ranked
number 1 in JD Power's initial quality/satisfaction survey.

When I buy boats and cars I buy them to keep them for 8, 10, 12 years. A
survey of my "satisfaction" after three months seems a bit pretentious.
The fact that I use and abuse an object for 5 years and it holds up well
satisfies me.
