Yo Harry & Doug...NY Times putting the lie...

GWB may not be the very best president ever, but among those who
continue to support him despite everything he has and has not done in
seven years are some darn fine Americans. Who knows? 25-30 years from
now history may prove the Bush Doctrine and his domestic policies to
be extremely well founded. Or not.

I admit that I had much higher expectations of him. I've been disappointed
and was wrong.
But, I don't think GWB set out with an objective of being "the 43rd Best
President" or even the 1st.
I think he was handed a very difficult challenge, unlike any in recent US
history, got some bad advice and information and set upon a course that was
ill-planned and conceived.
I also don't think he's the brightest bulb in the drawer, but that doesn't
make him a bad person.
Some people can multi-plex, thinking through several scenarios and all their
detailed steps simultaneously. People with that ability can logically arrive
at a conclusion or decision that is almost always spot on. He obviously
does not have that ability, so he relies on others to map it out. But it
still doesn't make him a bad person.
I also have a tough time with all the conspiracy theories of a personal
agenda by his critics. If they are true, then the critics would have to
acknowledge that he's a lot smarter than they give him credit for because
most of the time he gets his way. I also don't buy into the blame for 9/11
simply because it happened on "his watch".
I sincerely think he's doing what *he* thinks is best. It may not be, and I
know I'll get blasted with the "lives lost" count. The critics weren't so
vocal however back at early stages of the war and objectives were being
easily accomplished.
I also lost some respect for a few people including Colon Powell. There
obviously was a power struggle for influence and Powell gave up. I wish he
had stayed or had been forced to resign to emphasis his position. Maybe he
was ... I don't know.
It's interesting to speculate on what the past 7 years would have been like
had 9/11 not occurred.
Anyway, we try again next November. I agree with your previous comment, let
the best person for the job win.
