Would it be your opinion that the term made it's way West via the Celtic
immigrants who settled in the Appalachian (sp?) Mountains?

The way I've read it in various books here and there over the years, the
term redneck developed concurrently (parallel development) rather than
being totally attributed to the influx of Celtic Presbyterians.

My guess is that you are correct, but attributing the term to the United
Mine Workers in the early Twentieth Century, is clearly not correct. The
term was used earlier on both sides of the pond.

In fact, one of Mrs. Wave's dissertation advisors was something of an
expert on the subject regional and ethnic identifications and has some
compelling evidence that the term "redneck" has been around for a long
time in various languages and is not particularly related to strictly
English speaking groupings. I happened to mention it to her once at a
get together and was treated to forty five minutes of non-stop
information about the whole subject. The redneck thing came up as an
example.
