Yes, but that was after the initial damage which went unnoticed until
they started taking on water.

One of the more acceptable opinions about the Edmond Fitzgerald is
that the hatches were leaking and it wasn't noticed until the ship
started to list.

Seems to be a common theme in these types of accidents.
