any help appreciated
Put out a call to Don White in the header.
He just bought a boat from me and brought it into Canada. From what
he said, it wasn't that hard at all.
Nope... they kept telling me they were only interested in the trailer....
the least valuable of the combo package of boat/outboard/trailer.
Might be a bit more awkward sailing back... but driving across the border
at Calais, Maine just meant paperwork (have all documentation handy and
a fat chequebook). I was supprised that they made me pay the 14% HST on
the boat & outboard but only the 6% GST on the trailer. The PST portion
of an additional 8%, was collected when I registered the trailer.
I'm assuming your sailboat was manufactured in either the US or Canada.
Call a Canadian Customs office in New Brunswick where you will land with
the boat.
BTW the trailer is a major pain in the neck. Looking at it now, it
might have been easier to buy a new trailer up here, tow it down over the
border and negotiate for a boat/outboard package only. In my case they
made me pay $209.00 as a fee for processing the trailer...the same as
you'd pay if importing a car.
Plus all the running around making sure that the trailer met Canadian
standards etc.
Forgot to mention..this trailer is a like new 2005 model with compliance
sticker/model & serial numbers attached & easily read.... who knows if the
trailer is some old junker.
Thanks for your assuring post. Plan to do this myself. Being in Alberta
though I can say punt to the PST. Plan on buying a new early into next
year.
Did you get trailer plates before you left? How did you handle the trailer
license?
