The Coast Guard guys have a saying: " you have to go out, but you
don't have to come back". A poor day sailing, you and the boat might
be gone. Joshua Slocum, the first solo circumnavigator, went missing,
perhaps hit by a ship. Distance cruisers have been disappearing ever
since. There is also piracy. I had a neighbor when I was a kid who
ended up getting killed by pirates, in the sixties, before many took
the threat seriously.
