The stock Harley exhaust is not all that loud. The problem is that most
newbie Harley owners immediately exchange the pipes for a set of illegal
or
semi-legal aftermarket slip-ons. It's a ritual of sorts. Then there's
the
screaming 2 stroke rice rockets that will rupture your ear drums.

I ride an Ultra Classic with stock pipes and it isn't loud at all.

You're right, the stock Harley's are not that loud. Just listen to any of
the police Harley's running around. The stock Harley rider's answer to the
straight, loud pipes is that they are 'safer', which is a crock of crap.

Years ago, a neighbor took the job as CEO of a company who manufactured
mufflers for Harley. His wife said they were by a bar in Santa Cruz and
hubby is down looking at the scooters. Harley guy was a little antagonistic
when asking what he was doing. When he explained he was head of company
that made parts for Harley's, he was treated like royalty. Did not have buy
a drink in the bar.
