What is the best way for a single middle-aged woman
(who is inexperienced but willing to share the expenses)
to find a position as a crew on a sailboat and go sailing
around the world or at least to the Caribbean, Hawaii, etc ?

20 years ago, the week before Thanksgiving, I sailed the Boston -
Bermuda leg of a delivery to St. Thomas, expecting to fly home at
Bermuda. Once at Bermuda, I wanted to continue, but my bunk was spoken
for on the next leg.

As it turned out, there was a LOT of crew shuffling going on in St.
George's Harbor as some people learned ocean voyaging was not for them,
and others decided their life long friends had become monsters as well
as skippers.

I later met at least two people, one of each gender, who had flown into
Bermuda with the plan to hitch a ride south.

It may be hard to get the first ride (or not) but if you develop a
skill, like cooking, you will be in a slightly better position than some.

Basically, troll the docks, ask questions, if you start to hook up, as
very specific questions about what the "assumed" responsibilities are
going to be.

Good luck,

Jonathan
