At some point, Evinrude and Mercury will be out of the two cycle
outboard business.

May be true for Merc, but the Optimax is not going anywhere for a long
time for a variety of reasons.

Evinrude only builds two strokes.

And despite your experience, I'm seeing more and more ETECs around
here.

That's right...the smaller four cycle evinrudes are called johnsons.

Was I dreaming... or did I read somewhere that Evinrude will bump Johnson
out of the small 'kicker' engine market with small versions of ETEC
outboards?

There has been talk of that for a while, but the technology doesn't
translate well to engines smaller than 40 for some technical reason
that I don't remember - has to do with RPM levels and cubic capacity.
Not to mention price point.

Now that's the kind of thing that gets me thinking. Is it the
materials they use, the weight of the pistons maybe, or the flywheel.
Have they played with the compression, or timing.. errrr. Why would it
not work, what is different about the technology. Fuel delivery?? Now
I am going to have to do some reading, grrrrr.

Which is not to say that they won't solve it eventually, there is just
a technical problem at this point.- Hide quoted text -
