Hi, Richard,
I note in rec.boats.cruising that you had anticipated a 200AH/day
load in our system, based on the refrigeration, from about 3
years ago when we were designing our system.
Unless I miss my recollection badly, yours and glacier bay and
rparts' sites all think I'll have - in the tropics - about a
4000BTU load with the box as it's designed, 6" minimum extruded
polystyrene, encapsulated in epoxy, air-spaced with 1/8" battens
and reflected with foil on all exterior surfaces to boot. Dual
gasketed doors, interior microfans moving the air around, and two
Carel digital thermos controlling the spillover fan and
evaporator supply.
SSC in a keelcooled Frigoboat system should lead to a relatively
efficient reefer/freezer system.
I'll be posting a full analysis of what's aboard, and what each
item takes as well as the anicipated use times are. I'll wait
for a while for more real-time experience, but so far my numbers
are pretty conservative (we aren't using the things I've
included, in some cases).
Right now, I have no complaints about my charging system, and
will laser-align the alternator in my next belt change. The
lawnmower quality, too-long belt won't be too far away from a
change (well, in hundreds of hours - we have put about 200 hours
on the engine so far this trip, and the current belt, still
lawnmower grade, has had only one adjustment), so I expect even
that will be removed as a problem. Certainly, in the beginning,
the alignment was very badly out...
So, on what were you basing your estimate? And, if I have a
3.5cf freezer and 7cf reefer, as I'm not in the tropics (the
basis, I think, for the BTU calculations in yours and other
sites), what would be the expected BTU load, and given the D50
with smart speed control, what would you expect the daily AH
requirements for that portion would be?
Thanks.
