In a short story, James Joyce makes reference to The Terrible
Patagonians ---- possibly a reference to the winds, possibly the
Roaring Forties, does anyone know if the Patagonians was a regular
namme for these winds?

I think it's from "Evelin." The terrible Patagonians refers to strong
winds in the Straits of Magellan and not to the natives. Who was it?
Black Jack who stalked Slocum there and was put off by tacks on the
deck. He was a terrible Patagonian but not what Joyce referred to.
