Default Evenrude/Johnson engine problem

I am on my second motor. The first was a 35HP envenrude about '82 the
current is 88HP Johnson about '88. Used the same controls on both
motors. Both motors demonstrated the same problem.

Motor starts and seems to run OK. Boat moves, but when I go to full
throttle, motor runs OK for a while and then, to quote from another
post, acts just like the motor is shifted into nutural. The motor
races and the boat stops going through the water.

One boat repair place said they could find nothing wrong with either
motor.

Another place suggested I had "spun the prop" and that I should
replace the prop. I put a brand new prop on, and the problem is still
happening. The props on both motors were hte kind with the "rubber
boot" inside.

Any ideas?

"acts just like the motor is shifted into nutural" I would suspect that
you've hit on the answer with that statement. It sounds like the shift dog
is kicking the motor back into nuetral. Could be a linkage problem (that
was the problem with a 15hp of mine) or the dog could be worn so that it
won't hold in gear and kicks itself away from the gear. It's replaceable,
I'm sure but you might have to replace the gear, too. Way back in the late
50's when we had this problem we'd find a repair shop that would weld metal
to the dog and then grind back to specs but I doubt you'll find anyone who
would do that in this day and age.
