Default Honda b50a engine running rough

Hi all, I just bought a used 16' boat with a honda bf50a motor. I put
it in the water today and it started fine. I started to go down the
river and it started to hesitate after I got to about 3000 RPM's. Then
it just kicked in and went fine for about 10 minute at 4000-4500 RPM.
Just after that it started hesitating again, so I slowed down to about
2000 rpm, then it stalled. I noticed that I had gone through about 5
gallons of gas in about 10 - 15 minutes, and I could see the gas
leaking in the water. I removed the engine cover and saw a little bit
of water in there, so I titled the engine and got the water out of
it. We were stuck for about 10 minutes trying to put the motor in
gear. It would start fine in neutral, but when we put it in gear it
would stall out. We also noticed that the primer bulb kept getting
soft. I dont know if it is supposed to stay hard or not. Finally we
tricked it into going. On our way back, every time we went past 2,000
rpm, the engine would stall out. When we got back to the dock, a
friend said it might be the fuel filter. Does anyone have any
suggestions?? Thanks for your time,
Matt

Matt, It could be several things, but I'd start with fuel. I'd change
the fuel filter, hopefully you have one with a water seperator. Keep a
few spares on board as well.
