Go to the nearby yacht harbors and take note of the race schedule(s) on
the bulletin boards and show up a few hours before at that location.
The "beercan" series are often on Wednesday or some other mid-week day.
I found them to be the easiest to break into.

EVERY fleet can use extra crew. If you're good, you'll soon be in demand.

That's how I learned to sail and race. Laser sailors and racers are
particularly valuable, in my experience.
