Hi Joe,
Thanks for this. I am a long time fan of Burt Lancaster. I shall try
to get the movie. I can imagine he would be a convincing preacher.
At 15 I harboured ambitions to become a Seventh Day Adventist
minister. Through a strange circumstance, though a Moslem, I found
myself a student at one of their boarding schools where, as a "pagan",
to use the term they applied to me, I had to take two Bible subjects
each day (the others only one) in addition to the other subjects. Each
morning and evening everyone had to take a rostered turn to take the
services. I found that I quite enjoyed in and could give a passable
reading from the Bible and deliver a good, sometimes rousing mini-
sermon. As a result I earned a good sideline in fruit and chocolate
bars in taking some of the other's turns.
I noticed that the ministers all were well dressed in nice suits,
drove nice new cars, didn't seem to work hard and had the respect of
all. That was the life for me. Unfortunately it was pointed out to me
that one had to be a believer which I never was even though I gained
the highest marks in the school in the religious subjects 'New
Testament History" and "Old testament History". I think I had the
advantage of coming at it new and thus finding it very interesting in
an academic way. They expelled me the next year anyway.
cheers
Peter
Don't listen to Wikipedia, rent the movie.
It's one of the best American movies ever made IMO.
1960 with Burt Lancaster... Burt Lancaster is perfect in the title
role, imparting believability and humanity to a role that was
originally conceived by Sinclair Lewis in satirical terms. Matching
him every step of the way is the gorgeous and gifted Jean Simmons, who
here gives the performance of a lifetime as Sister Sharon, the
evANGEList and true believer. Miss Simmons has never been more varied
and moving (or more beautiful) than in her performance here. Lancaster
is great and dominates the action, but she is the spiritual anchor for
the film.
This will give you a clue IMO of what 98.3 % of the fire and
brimstone preacher you hear on the radio are really up to.
