Greetings - the RPM gauge on my Perkins 4-108 isn't registering
anything. Is this a mechanical gauge (driven by a cable) or is it
electrical. If electrical where does it get the signal? Suggestions
on where to start looking for the problem ard greatly appreciated. -

It could be either as Perkins do have a plug that allows connecting a
mechanical tach to the top of the oil pump drive. Having said that, it
is most likely that the tach is electrical and is connected to a
terminal on the alternator. Trouble shooting is easy. If the
alternator works and the tach doesn't then it is either the tach or
the wiring. If the alternator isn't putting out fix that first and
probably the tach will recover.

Yeah, ours is electrical on Lionheart with a separate little wire from
the alternator so it gets AC before the alternator's rectifiers. I bet
the wire is broken, probably right at the alternator where the most
vibration occurs.

Larry - thank you - I'll trace that little wire and see where it
goes.
