Default Grease for seacocks ..

crisco works pretty well.

Seacock.......... Lots of things go by this name. There are the "old" style:
solid bronze, pet cock style if ya ever had a chemistry class. The
"new generation" are bronze housing with a ss ball and Teflon socket.
Now get this. Took my boat to a local yard in Portland, OR. They did
me a couple free favors so I bought a 1 1/2" seacock for the head
discharge from them. It was the new style Groco ss ball and Teflon
socket style. I asked them to go ahead and thread it on cause I was
leaving for a week. I asked how they were going to put it on: 3M 5200
the guy said with a smile. I declined and said no 5200 and asked how
they ever got them off again. Answer: we just heat them up with a
torch............. I declined again. I called Groco and asked the tech guy
about heating their ball sea cocks. Groco answer, "why would you do
that?!?!?!?" After a few words explaining about the 5200, Groco said
forget it. Might over heat the gaskets. And added the OLD style solid
bronze pet cock would probable handle that kind of abuse but no way on
the new style.

Groco also said this was probably another example of how products
change BUT peoples habits don't. As a result, tradition can be a real
problem when used with new material and products. Personally, I like
the new style pet cock. Starts getting hard...... junk it and get a new
one. End of story. And this is coming from a guy who used "lapping
compound" to seat pet cock valves. Pain in the ass if ya ask me.

So I did a test. One has Teflon tape, one has Dolphinite, another has
Permitex soft gasket seal. Three years later and all are dry. Ask me
in seven more when I swap them all for new. Ten years is good enough
service life for me.

Crisco?!! I bet you use duct tape for band aids and olive oil as a
recreational aid.
