The link above sheds light on the truth. It was a suicide. That's
shameful enough for a
family to live with. Perhaps the drug rumor is more accepted these days
than suicide and
perhaps the parents didn't do much to dispel it...

Suicide is a choice. And why should anyone assume it was a shameful choice?
Did you walk a mile in her shoes? And why should the family feel shame? Did
they do something shameful?
