So? The "displacement" of a boat is the mass of the water it displaces at
rest. A "displacement boat" or hull is one that displaces approximately
the same amount of water regardless of its speed. A "planing hull" is one
that when moving lifts out of the water and thus displaces less water than
its mass would imply.

It doesn't necessarily have to "lift out of the water" just be
supported (at least partially) by the force of the water flowing under
the hull. Although with some boats, the lift is pretty amazing and has
to be seen/felt to be believed.
