Wayne,
I was coming into Wiggins around 3pm today and saw a Grand Banks heading
north between 3 and 5 miles from shore. Was that you?
Just checked the GPS track log on my laptop. We were abeam of Wiggins
Pass at 3:12 PM and exactly 3.95 NM off shore. It looks like you
probably saw us because there were no other north bound boats any
where near by. I usually run closer to shore than that but decided
to straight line it from Marco Island to Ft Myers Beach to save time.
We spent last night anchored in Little Shark River. Tides were
extremely low this morning when we were leaving, and the channel there
was at least a foot shallower than charted depths. Lucky we got out
before noon time.
I was guessing that was you, as I read your dolphin report when you were
heading down to the Keys.
I was in a 30' Grady White heading SE into a nasty quartering sea at 26
knots. The boat handled it well, but I was throwing a helluva lot of water.
My starboard side eisenglass was soaked and salt encrusted, and I picked you
up on radar long before I saw you. When you were off my stern, I thought I
recognized the boat. I didn't know the name of your vessel, or I would have
tried to hail you on 16.
I'd imagine that your vessel didn't even feel the seas...especially with
them at your back.
