Surfing and planning are two different actions.

If they are surfing they aren't planning

If they are planning it means the hull is traveling on the surface of
the water.

Surfing has the Hull in the water and it is over coming the bow and
stern wave.

I really don't think you want to either in abnormal wave size. The
conditions that were being discribed should have made the Skipper
already "poles bare" and wedged in a position to PRAY
