Let's try it a little easier. AFAIK, there are only two ways to obtain
USENET news....

an "IHAVE" feed, which you are going to have to pay some really big
bucks for and is really for USENET servers that have lots of
subscribers (you aren't going to want to go this way), or

a "Dynamic Suck Feed", which is kinda like your newsreader on
steroids. It is just a program, resident on your computer, that
downloads USENET posts from 1 or more remote servers. (Actually, you
set it up a lot like your own news reader.) Then..... and this is the
only difference... your news reader downloads from *your* server
rather than *theirs*.

Now, I set up my own news server so that I could have incredibly
configurable filtering when this newsgroup hit the wall a couple of
years ago with the rep/dem/blue/red/he sucks/they suck posts. I also
found it convenient that it merged the feeds of multiple servers. That
is no longer required since I use a news client that will download
from multiple servers, but I do keep the server running so I have
access outside my ISP's local domain and for the filter attributes.

If you are looking for better overall performance.... the easiest (by
far) and cheapest way to go about that is to find a decent news
provider. (Let them do all of the hard stuff.) This would be my
personal recommendation..... $6.00/mo and reliable, rock solid
service:

Thanks Gene,
I'll save your suggestion as a backup solution. I found
freetext.usenetserver.com It's read only, but I can live with that. It
runs under Outlook Express so I don't have to reconfigure filters. If I
want to post I can always go to Google to do my needleing or whatever.
I hope you dont mind if I wish you a Merry Christmas.
