How does a mere mortal set up his own server?

A number of different ways. One, you can do it on your own by putting
up a dedicated server on your address, pay the fee for the domain name
(like jiminfl.com) and get the URl propogated which takes about a
week. At that point, you can move around, set up your own news feed,
anything you want to do within the limits of your server.

Or...

You can set up with a company that provides web space like Lunarpages.

Or...

You can pay for unlimited access to Usenet using one of the news
groups out there. I use Easynews as a feeder to my own domain - great
deal and it works very well. Never had any downtime.

Much too complicated for me to deal with. You lost me with propigating
Urls, setting up news feeds, my server, web space. Have a Happy,
