A Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry, Suffolk police and Coast Guard
rescue vessels teamed up to rescue eight people aboard a disabled
45-foot sailboat on Long Island Sound.
At about 3 p.m. Wednesday, the skipper of the sailboat called the Coast
Guard north of Port Jefferson and reported a jammed rudder, making it
impossible to steer. He also said his crew was unable to lower the
sails in the 5-foot seas and high winds, Suffolk police said.
Suffolk Marine Bureau Officers Dave Goldstein and Matthew Funaro on a
patrol boat arrived at the scene with a Coast Guard vessel from Eatons
Neck.
Police arranged for a ferry to come alongside the sailboat to block the
wind. That allowed the officers to board the stricken vessel, lower the
sails and set up a tow line. The sailboat was towed six miles to Port
Jefferson Harbor. One passenger was taken to the hospital with a leg
injury.
