Actually, this is just an Urban Legend. AFDBs do not need the
deflector point. As you will note at the link "Building An AFDB,"
getting the shiny side of the foil out is more important that any sort
of thorny appendage.
I'm going to the store to buy a few hundred rolls of the wide format
