Perhaps he could mould a glass filler to provide a mechanical base
strong enough to withstand the descent of the mast, sitting, whatever.
Flexion causes leakes.

I have moulded fillers for mast bases, etc. Use thick bog and saran
wrap to avoid adhesion.
