Like James posted, make darn sure the condition of the boat justifies
the cost of replacing the engine and outdrive. That cost will be far
more than the finished value of the boat if it's in unusually pristine
condition from every aspect except mechanical, and with any 27 year old
fiberglass boat built with wooden transom, bulkheads, and stringers
that can be an iffy proposition. Assuming you bought this boat very
cheaply, you probably didn't have a surveyor look at it prior to
purchase. Now that you're contemplating spending five figures on new
mechanics- it might be wise to have the hull and systems inspected
thoroughly for several hundred bucks (to a grand at the most) prior to
the writing of enormous checks.
If the boat has been sitting around for years unused, you don't have
any indication that the hull would even hold together once subjected to
the stress of getting underway again. Every so often a rotten transom
simply breaks open on one of these old "classics" (not just Bayliners),
and then it can be a quick trip to the bottom.
