Default raymarine RC5201

Is this a colour or monochrome plotter?

The "C" in RC means color, don't recall a RC5201 but there is a RC520
and that came in different flavors of HSB and then HSB2. This link
would be a good download to read/study for info:

Is it worth getting software for it or should I convince the owner to
update (this will be hard as it is a matched pair with the SL72 radar

You can probably figure that out from the manuals, if you can get
someone to tell you the model and serial numbers from the RC520 a call
to Raymarine will sort out the issues like chart chip compatibilities
and the like. Here is a link the the Raymarine support page:

I've used the RC520 and SL72 in coastal waters, one or two days at a
time and in power boats. It is a good system. Not abreast of all the
newest things on the market but good enough. I seem to remember the
RC520 chart plotter as something I like in use.
