Marketing and the fashion industry are just two of the areas that are

Especially marketing. How in the world would our massive
consumer-products industries survive if they couldn't convince people to
go into debt to buy things they don't need?

I'm not sure how much "art" is really involved in advertising, certainly
it is somewhat of a creative (in an applied way) field. This may be what
Binary Charlie was referring to when he said "Art DRIVES the economy."
And while it's a bit of a stretch of the definition of "art" I agree...
how much Budweiser beer would get sold if they didn't spend millions
advertising it?

A lot of art goes into advertising...my rx brother in law was a graphics
designer...he and most of his colleagues background came from art
institutes...photography is an art...watch the Cleo awards
sometime...they are intersting and show the best of what advertising has
to offer...it is an art to get consumers to select one product over
another...without the creativity invested in advertising, products
wouldn't sell...imagine if commercials were just scientists spouting off
the facts about their particular brand...who would buy? Think of
pharmaceutical commercials where they have to relate all the horrendous
side effects of their products but the commercial sells the medication
even though the facts are there that it may do something other than cure
you...
